SOLUTION - Fixing "Disk Error" in hacked AK2025 players

Hi Guys, Easy fix fot the fake ebay player.
It is not 8GB as stated in Auction.
They are 2GB

So you have to accept that it is not 8GB!
Once you have accepted that you can move on.These players are hacked and not the true 8GB they are advertised to be.

We've establised that it is 2GB, now to the solution.

1. Download MP3 Player disk tool. You can find it here: http://mympx.org/Downloads/p13_sectionid/9/p13_fileid/54 or here http://mympxdownloads.com/Downloads/p13_sectionid/10/p13_fileid/13, as it is a must when owning one of these players.

2. Open it. Select Format type low.

3. Click on the Partion and Encrypt tab and slide the slider to 5984MB. That is the maximum!!!!

4. Hit start and let it do what it has to. Partition.

5. Once finished close and got to windows my computer and you will see two disks.

6. Format the 1.89GB with FAT 32 and your set.

The other partion is usless as it is pseudo.

AS for firmware. If anyone creates a better hack heheehee! post it up..

Cheers, Let me know how you/s go.

Lamaboy 10th Aug 2009 4:24 pm

This is my exact problem!
Thanks so much!
Also, have you noticed odd errors when you copy music? Sometimes i'll be copying music into the mp3 player and it says "Cannot copy file X: File not found" or something like this.
Is this error still happening AFTER the fix?
Thanks!

Use Smaller Partition

Use the smaller partition.
The other Partition do not use. You will loose data.
Should be like a flash drive.

I hope someone should have a Firmware fix to edit the start up screen and menus.
Controller AK2025.
It would be nice.

Let me know how you go.

markv 18th Aug 2009 6:30 pm

Thank you very much! this was very useful

I had to "play" with the encryption data quantity, because it wasnt exactly 5984MB

Another tip, go to setting and put online mode to Normal drive, now when you plug it only que good drive will appear :)

By the way what wa your total disk capacity in the mp4 player disk tool? mine was 8170MB

fakeipod 16th Sep 2009 3:24 am

thanx

ya it worked for me. i set it at 6201 mb and got 1.92 gb out of a 8 gig 3rd gen nano. maybe i can get more if i do ill post and let you know.

TonyB 17th Sep 2009 2:28 am

You can try..............

:confused:Fairly unlikely you will be able to get anymore than 2gjg.

fakeipod 18th Sep 2009 2:07 am

Im still getting format error? i dont understand this thing.

TonyB 18th Sep 2009 7:13 am

I can help...

Please specific what you don't understand

Neptune5k 29th Sep 2009 3:09 am

I just picked up an 8gb "3rd Gen" Nano clone with an AK2025 chip and 9.5.54 FW. No matter what I seem to try with the disk tool, I keep getting a "Disk Error" whenever I try to access anything on the player. I followed you guide to a T and everything would appear to be fine and data copies to the drive - but like i said, any attempt to actually use the thing spits out a "Disk Error"

Any ideas?

TonyB 29th Sep 2009 4:59 am

Type of RAM?

It is AK2025 controller?
What type of RAM is it?
Photo will be helpful if possible. That way I could tell you capacity.:)

Neptune5k 29th Sep 2009 5:17 am

The NAND has the following printed on it:
SAMSUNG 934
K9GAG08U0D-PCB0
FNG565MAC

I havn't been able to find a datasheet, but it sure looks like this is a 2gb chip. I've got my player working, but the most I can squeeze from it is 1.92GB by sliding the encrypted disk capacity to 6200mb - any more than that and I get a disc error. That gives me about 1970mb from the original quoted 8170.

Thanks for your help, please let me know if you stumble across a datasheet.

TonyB 30th Sep 2009 6:32 am

2gig Sound Right

Yep, You wont get more than capacity than that.
There'll be thousands of these things out now.
Chinese doggy products.

Why does windows XP recognize it as 7.76 gb and the older version of mp3 utilities sees the same amount of memory? I will try to format this piece of junk again using this new software. I am beginning to think I really need the full verison of the firmware to reload it into the chip.

thanks

Ted

Neptune5k 5th Oct 2009 12:36 pm

That's the mem hack in action. Download MP3 player tools 4.05 or earlier, it will have the MP3 disk utility you can use to set the memory to the actual memory size. Once you get that, follow TonyB's guide and adjust the slider/reformat/repeat until you find your max memory.

ted 5th Oct 2009 1:58 pm

hello neptune,

Thanks I have tried all those options you have mentioned an I threw the player out in the trash yesterday. After I performed the dead player recovery guide proceedure the player refused to get past the hourglass once I turned it back on. I appreciate your help but I decided these chipod mp3 players are just a rip off.

thanks anyway

Ok I downloaded the tool from the link you provided and installed it. For some reason however i cant find the disk tool.

When i go to the prgrams menu. (start> Programs> mp3 player utilities 10.00> ) i only get 4 options. Media manager, Mp3 player upgrade tool, uninstall and video converter. I checked them all but there is no disk utility.

Perhaps there is something i am missing. Please explain how to get the disk tool. Need help asap.

Thanks.

You're right, I just tested and there is no Disk Tool.
The latest version of the MP3 Player Utilities that has the Disk Tool is version 4.18 so I would suggest downloading and installing that instead.

Download from MyMPx.org: Download AMV Convert Tool 4.18 - MP3 Player Utilities 4.18 - MyMPx
or
from MyMPxDownloads.com: Download AMV Convert Tool 4.18 - MP3 Player Utilities 4.18 - MyMPxDownloads

mp4 disk utilities

You need an earlier version such as 4.05 I had the same problem. Version 10 is useless I have no idea why they even bothered writing that version in the first place.

When I follow the instructions, I get 2 drives. Drive E is 3810.66MB. Drive F is 17.44MB. I no longer have the disk error. So, my mp3 player is actually 17.44 MB?????

Digitalkingz 4th Nov 2009 11:09 am

you could have accessed the system memory & the storage memory. The thing about hacked china players is they don't always use the same hacking method

sunchi 17th Dec 2009 11:57 pm

I have another solution !
I have hacked 16 ipod like player

You need Gparted linux utility for exeample http://rip.7bf.de/current/
Burn .iso and boot from burned CD
Shouse x32bit kernel -start x skip keymap prompt
After you boot to GUI press right mouse button to get menu
choise Application - partition tools - Gparted
Find you player in the right corner
I create one partition of 2 Gb (1950 Kilobyte) if i create 2048 kb i get a "Disk Error " on the player
Now player works fine

jcs7928 21st Dec 2009 5:10 am

You Rock Sunchi! Fixed my 16GB 4th Gen ......................

I was close to giving up on this "New 16GB 1.8" 4th MP3 MP4 FM USB Player Rec+GIFT Green" aka pos ChiPod - but this worked to make it a useable 2GB nano (which isnt bad for $20 shipped)

Anyways - Just wanted to say thanks for posting a solution that worked for mine. I can now stop wasting time on this.

Anyone else with the AK2025 mem hack - try the bootable linux fix CD solution that Sunchi posted above this post, it just may work for you as well.

Thanks again

jcs7928 21st Dec 2009 7:29 am

One last thing to note- I found that if you try recording your voice on the ChiPod after formating it to the proper 2GB size it may cause errors - for me this isnt a a feature I would ever use so I wont do it again. I just ended up reformatting it again and now dont use the recorder. FYI

I have been looking for a solution to this problem for weeks, I finnally figured this method out myself yesterday and was coming here to post it when i came across this. For one more step of added goodness go into set up>online mode> and choose normal only. This stops the fake memory from coming up in the second drive when you connect your mp4 to the computer. Thanks.

I can't see that setting. Could you upload the screen where it is?
Thanks.

frozensoda 17th Mar 2010 4:39 am

Its a setting on the mpo3 player itself and each firmware is different as far as i can tell ( i have about 15 different versions) so it may not be on yours.

ians1 27th Mar 2010 5:31 am

I have the same problem. Re format as per instructions still says 15.9Gb and I have copied files over. But player still says "Disk Error!" and setting the Online Mode different things like Multi Drive, Normal or Encrypted Only has no effect. If I go back and reformat using disk tool and leave the small 17Mb dive and then set the Online mode to Normal then it shows 17M in Memory Info but setting the Online mode to Encrypted or Multi Drive still produces error.

I had a player that would at least play something before I reformated it, now it only seems to be able to have a 17Mb drive!

What can I do?

I have 2 of these which are showing the "Disk Error!" after format

they are def AK2025

Problem solved on a mp4 player looking like this one :
http://zeubest.free.fr/mp4.jpg

I brought it on ebay, as a 16 GB... there's a sticker : 16 gb !
In fact, it's a 2 GB , only the sticker is 16 Gb !
Firmware : QS_AK2025C
2008/04/23
9.5.54

Chip on it is a K9GAG08U0M, so, 2 GB

I've solved the disk error problem using :

first, Fat32Formatter (download here) simple utility (one file, no install), and making a 1950 Mo partition. As fat 32Formatter is unable to format it, probably due to the hacked system, then, simply format the drive with windows.

Hope it helps.

ians1 20th Apr 2010 10:28 am

Got one of them as well! Didn't I do well collecting such a bunch of stuff!

I fixed mine with the chkflsh util which I think does the same thing, ie sets an active partition of the right size to match the available memory.

Check it with H2testw to make sure all the memory is usable.

The method discussed in this thread no longer works for most players. Here is a better solution for ak2025

Ok sorry misunderstood

The disk error seems to be the result of the partitions being in the wrong order, ie Partition 0: should be the active one with 2GB 16GB whatever and the smaller one of 17MB-50MB should be Partition 1: and not active as for as I can see. Not quite sure why the arrangement of 2 partitions, maybe have a play around with settings for a single partition and see what works best.

As far as i can tell, the partition that is active will be the one in use regardless of its position on the partition table. Correct me if i am wrong please.
In my experience disk error appears when the device has been loaded with more than its max capacity IE you put files in hacked memory that doesnt exist. On my players, the disk error doesn't go away even if you can successfully delete all the files on it. to go even further, the small partition (17-50mb) is not necissarry for the device to work but it puts the real memory either at the beginning or the end of the chip to avoid overflow errors. i think o.o

ians1 21st Apr 2010 11:40 am

I had "Disk Error"with no files at all on it straight after format

I have a couple devices to play with now so I will try replicate the error and determine what causes it exactly.

Still not sure why 2 partitions, and you right, it can be made with only 1 partition using chkflsh util

UltraSonic 10th Jun 2010 3:36 pm

Thanks for the solution
I used a similar method to fix up my bootleg machine from ebay and found your post just a little too late. Better late than never eh?

Don't know if this is helpful but I appear to have a new incarnation which was fixed up using this method (details below)

{
BKS2025029MV12 Board Number / Markings
Ding1027

SNW LCM LCD Display

K9GAG08U0M PCB0 Flash Chip

AK2025C Main Controller Chip

CL5767 FM Module

Reported it's Firmware as follows;

2008/09/30
9.5.54
2009/12/10
HST_SDKV91
}

The unit is unbranded but is remarkably similar (aside from the hacked OS) to the MN799 device offered by a popular (bonifide) supplier out of China that most of us will have used or heard of at some point.

Regards,
Alex
