Default Differences between 1st, 2nd and 3rd Generation ipod players?

I don't know about everyone else but I would like a detailed explanation of the differences between 1st 2nd and 3rd generation ipod players (Chinese or otherwise) and also what is meant by flash memory or rather how do you know if yours is flash memory or not?
