Default Need help in developing for a RK27xx device

Hey,
I've currently got an unbranded media player named simply "MP5" with a RK2706 Rockchip. I've been trying for some time to develop new applications for it, along with a new interface (hence creating or modifying existing firmware), but I am having a severe set of troubles.
Firstly, I can't seem to back up the existing firmware. I've tried to use the "rkusb.tag" trick but it doesn't seem to work. This is making me hesitant at installing any new firmware.
But even so, I'm a little confused at how to develop beyond that as there seem to be so many resources and the information isn't all that well organised (having multiple chipsets and two MyMPX sites doesn't help). I believe I have the RK27xx v2.2 SDK (a 190mb folder with the name RK27SDK_NEW), is this the right SDK? If so, how exactly do I compile the firmware? (I've programmed for many years, but I'm more used to a project file I can open up in an IDE). Finally, once it's compiled, how do I transfer it over to the device? And if it's complied, what degree of certainty do I have that it will work on my device.
I have a full specs of the device if anyone wants to know them, but in the meantime I would really like to know how to get started developing for this thing. A simple "Hello World" program would be a wonderful start.

hi SoBird and Welcome.

There is a project file "rk27_baord.mcp" in C:\rk27sdk_new\Ide\Rk27_board

I open this up in ADS. Then it's quite easy to work in the IDE.
When you sucessfully compile the build, the 4 firmware folders are generated and all you need to do is copy over to the player and reboot.
All the info you need should be in this thread :- Hooray!!! Rockchip SDK!

However you MUST backup your working firmware first, apart from the obvious risk there is information in it you will need to redo a custom firmware.

Have you tried putting a file called RKLDSET.FLW on your player? That could well open it up. Also AleMaxx has created a linux tool for this purpose too, although I haven't tried it yet.

Also the best place to ask about this is here Hooray!!! Rockchip SDK! where most of the discussion takes place.

Good Luck!
