This looks exactly like mine (Super Talent Vidego 28 4GB w/ camera), and mine is an Anyka player (in PC camera mode it shows on the computer as a Anyka USB web cam) and it has a mini (not micro) sd card slot. I don't know much about changing firmware but if you look up the firmware and hardware version, may be someone can tell you what it is.
I use mine to read text e-book a lot, and I have no problem reading the text files (my player is set to traditional Chinese to read Chinese text files). What happens when you open a text file? Did you put the files in the ebook folder and are the text files in the same language as your language setting?
As I understand, there is a high risk of killing a generic player if you try to change the firmware (read the posts in "Dead Players" forum). If you must you should back up your original firmware first, and make sure you get all of it (I read with some players you don't get it all because the firmware is not in a hidden partition).
