This might be coming a bit late but it's one of two things - either the player does not properly identify itself so it isn't allowed the full 500mA from the USB port, which results in not enough current to charge the battery, or your USB controller has a bug. I have found that VIA USB controllers do NOT charge chipods, but they do charge mobile phones for instance. Try charging the player in another computer and see if that works.
