Default hi there... and advice on beating a stubborn memory hack...

hello there! first post and all...

i bought a 16gb mp4 player from an ebayer (it was this item). i'm fairly clued up on these and so i was expecting 2gb or less, and that turned out to be the case: h2testw has it as 1.7gb ok.

i contacted the seller and he refunded instantly and told me i could keep the player. so now it's a project.

the question is: how can you remove the memory hack from this unit? is it even possible? has anyone ever managed it?

i've read through the sticky thread, and gone for some of the later solutions. the main problem seems to be that nothing will see the true size, ever.

i've tried using hddguru and doing a low-level format. no change.

i've tried using gparted under linux. i've deleted the partition, and then unplugged the device, and it seemed to just reformat itself. the whole file structure was present (all the folders etc).

it's got me puzzled, and any suggestions are most welcome!
