Well i've looked at all firmware versions and it seems the skytex as a codec less than the other firmwares. The file is rk28_jbig2.rkl which skytex firmware does not have. I've dragged it into the skytex firm and made a .img file, but do not know if its added it to the player and will work. I was not bothered with the text to speech, but would have been good just to have it back on the player even tho the voices are bad.
I'm still happy with the player and it still plays all the formats i want. Not tried the .rmvb video files yet |
Dragging the codec rkl into the system folder shouldnt work
The codecs are coded into the base.rkw file and by glancing at it a few minutes ago i didnt see the rk28_jbig2 reference there anywhere.
Beats me why they would leave out an codec unless they ran into some sort of memory problem along the way. What `might` work is to replace an already existing codec with the rk28_jbig2 since those are modules that get loaded by the OS. So basically..sacrificed one for another. So delete the , lets say..r28_rv40 (real player) and copy the jbig2 in the codec folder then rename the jbig2 to r28_rv40. As i said..might work. I just got a copy of the RockChip 27xx SDK and i must say that it is a gem. Tons of info about the structure and inner workings. This will be a `weekend` time sink for me i suppose. Only other thing that interests me right now is a 4000mA battery pack that has the exact same dimensions..now that would be neat. 10hrs video playtime lolol awesome Regards Nicolas |
Btw Trinity...
What format do you use for your books ? Epub, Mobi ?
Just asking because i finally started to convert all my PDF`s and txt files. Also i am wondering if you are using a special setting to export. Linux detects the reader as a Hanliv V5/V6 but hey no clue really.Last night ive tried already to tinker around with different formats etc etc but most of the time it looks odd. (pages end in the middle of the screen ya know that kind of stuff) I would appreciate any pointers. Regards Nicolas |
Don't think i'll start messing about with changing files names seeing as it works fine. I think it as enough codecs and plays enough formats for what i want, but if the codec was needed, yes it would be a good idea just rename the file and trick the player to using the codec.
I've had a little play with different linux systems in the past, but could not get on with them, or just not enough time to learn the them, so i decided to stick with windows 3.1 lol. If doing a spot of reading, its either in epub, txt or mobi format. I have 1 pdf file which is a manual for my offroad bike and is 104meg which takes a min or 2 to load, but fairly pointless on the ereader as the writing is too small unless using the zoom function, plus the buttons are fiddley when trying to move the page about on the zoom function. I tried converting pdf to epub with calibre, but just ended up with seperate pages of the pdf file which was not really any better. Most of the 20,000 ebooks i have (only read 4 of them so far, lol) are mostly in epub, as thats my prefered format. Loads a little quicker than mobi. If i can't find the ebook i want in epub, then i'll go look for mobi instead. Txt is ok, except for the odd symbol being in chinese and the broken paragraphs here and there, other than that txt files are ok. Why not just download epub or mobi instead of mucking about with pdf files? For video files, i prefer xvid and divx avi. I have a dvd player that plays avi files too, which i watch films on, so no need to convert them to vob via convertxtodvd. The ereader also comes in handy for my headcam vids. With my archos 405, i can record the full days ride, then later chop out and save the funny bits and crashes using virtual dub to smaller files, then put them on the ereader for the lads to have a laugh at. |
Well i cant decide on a format ...
Lol Windows 3.1 wow thats old skool.
As far as linux distros are concerned my favorite is Ubuntu (easy installer and you can try it before installing via Live CD) Give it a whirl..well worth it. Support for those readers is also excellent there. I have picked 10 books that i want to `trial` convert. They are in PDF right now but this format is so ugly, slow and as you said a tad difficult to read on the device. Calibre seems to have a quite intelligent way of reformatting the books but setting this up takes a bit. My C++ Bible for instance is 158mb as a PDF and by the time it load the battery is dead lol. Once done it can be shared with the Calibre community tho. (Gotta love open source solutions) At the moment i am also toying with the idea of getting one of those tablet PCs. IPad is too expensive and again its totally proprietary so thats a no no. 10 Inch tablet are actually fairly cheap atm, about 150 USD which isnt all that bad considering what else you can do with it. Would be like a ebook reader + WiFi + Internet etc etc. Wifi would make my live already alot easier but a pure ereader WiFi is too expansive. Well we will see hehe Regards Nicolas |
Sorry if I'm a few days late, but can anyone explain to me this:
I have a Skytex Primer. Does that mean that it has the same RK2729 SDK? Because when I connected it to the tool (skytex.com offers the tool for "upgrading" to firmware 1.1), it shows that it is a RK2900 |
Wow, nvm I opened it and found that it is in fact RK2729. Hehe let the modding begin!

Hi,
I have just joined and read this thread and found it most interesting and so many clever people. Now the question-I have been lucky enough to have been given a Migear e-book reader ,and after reading this thread would like to install the Skytex firmware. The problem is i am not sure how to do it--do you have to erase the old from the Mi ? or do you just change it for the skytex? is there a step by step instruction for a simple soul? I have a son in law who has some knowledge of computers -o he would be able to do the actuall computer yo reader work.If you could help me I would be gratefull Best regards |

In the skytex folders you have d/loaded, open the file "RK28Upgarde.exe", when the box appears, hit the Image path tab and point it towards the image file which is in the other folder that came with the skytex download. Image file name is: RK2729(100706)_7INC_RDA5807pFM_JINHAN(newUI)_20100 825.img Once you have done this, you can then hit the upgrade tab which will install the new firmware. Takes about 90 seconds. After upgrade, unplug the ereader and you might have to push the restart button on the back of the ereader to reset the reader. You will need a little pin or something that will fit into the hole on the back of the ereader. @Nicolas What do you mean win 3.1 is old school? Is there a newer version out there? win 3.2 or something? Just kidding, lol. I'm running winxp pro ;-) |
Hi Trinity,
Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to answer the question so quickly and clearly. I will try this over the weekend and lrt you know how I get on. Once again a big big thanks for giving help to someone less knowledgeable in these matters Regards ysanbelle |
I upgraded my Migear to the latest skytex firmware after reading the infor here. My Migear now plays video but I can't read any of my chinese epub books . The menu and file names display correctly in chinese but when I open the book all I see are "?" instead of words. Its only epub files as txt & rtf files are fine. I try going back to the migear firmware as provided with the DRM upgrade but is the same. Can you please tell me how to convert the 1.0.5 firmware thats here to an IMG file so that I can try as I don't need DRM. Thanks in advance.

What i did was to use Magiciso. Open Magiciso and open the skytex firmware img file. Then i deleted all the files in the skytex img file and and then dragged and dropped the old files and folders to where i just deleted the others, then "save as" and then pick any name with .img extension. Worked for me. Hope it helps |
Thanks very much for the prompt reply. I'll give a try. I converted 1 chinese epub book to FB2 and that works but I don't want to do that if I don't have to.
|
I have now downgraded my migear to 1.0.5 and yes that fix the problem with the chinese epub files. Thanks to Nick for the firmware and Trinity for the instruction to convert it to an IMG file. I've email both Skytex and Migear with this problem but I don't expect to get a reply or a bug fix anytime soon. No need to when all the smart guys are here. Thanks again everyone.

Hi All,
Trinity -Thanks for the help and info -managed to change from Migear to Skytex -very pleased much improved. Just have one question to anyone who has meet this problem or who knows the answer. How to set the time and make sure it works. I have tried both uder Mi and Sky -go to settings and time set the time and date go to yes and press the centre button in the circle. The time alters at the top of the reader but does not change after an hour it is still at the same .Then when I turn it off and turn back on it shows 00.00--(not reset) If any one has an idea i would be grateful. trying to upgrade
Hi.
I just got one of these and was hoping someone could help me with upgrading the firmware like a some posters did. I follow the instructions, but when click on SWITCH, the Migear's screen goes black, and it disapears off my pc. and in the updater program I never get the green light to upgrade. any ideas what I'm doing wrong? |
Hi:
I have updateed my ebook with primer firmware ,ITS BEAUTIFULL thx all |
If you have the mebook firmware may i have a copy please.I have an unbranded ebook reader with rk2729 chip and looks identical to the mebook I put the primer(skytex) firmware on but have a bit of video problem and I am hoping the mebook software will address this.
thanks Andy email:- mojo2745@gmail.com |
Hi there,
i have also bought me a Chinareader and because the software on this device sucks, especially the readerapp, i was searching around and found this thread, which is very interesting. The Device called TMSON K7 and is based on a Rockchip 2729. I have flashed all the different Firmwares mentionend in this thread without Problems. The Device startet up, but the Buttons dont work. I have tried to put components from the other firmwares to the Original Firmware, which changes then but the Buttons still don't work. For me it comes down to the File in the Systemfolder called BASE.RKW. I think all the apps and settings are in this file. When i exchanged the ebook.bin in the APPDATA-Folder i can see no difference to the original Version. Because I am clueless now, i post two Pictures of this reader. Maybe somebody knows an branded Version of it which has a better Firmware. Thanks for reading. cu PL http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/3300/pict0272kl.jpghttp://img813.imageshack.us/img813/9003/pict0271kl.jpg |

yes, restoring the original software was no problem with the RK28 Devicemanager.
Before i have tried the other firmwares i've backup the original one. I have finaly found an OEM which is selling the device as Qumo fresh in russia. They have a Firmware for download which i installed with no problem. Here is the link: http://www.qumo.ru/files/422 It basicly does not more then the original one. It has only 4 Languages, no formating options (only justified), No Backcolor settings. Only two Fonts (Times/Arial), in four sizes. But the formating of epub works correctly now. I hope they release more updates with more settingoptions for the readerpart cu PL |

i am only using it for Epub. Pdf i have not tried.
It is not my mainreader anyway. I am still using a windows mobile based device with Ubook and alreader. If the Firmware gets better , especially the configurationoptions, i may use it as my preferred reading device cu PL |
Am I late on this?
Hello,
I'm a little bit late to this but I hope someone sees it. I've got 2 of this black 7inch 4GB 480*800 Pixels screen ebook reader A121 | eBay ebooks. However, I did it in separate times. The first one is very nice and I use it a lot, but the second one has some problems like... Rotation only work with pdf and freeze on ebook submenu. So I checked both firmwares. The good one has Rockchip v1.0.5 and the bad one has Rockchip v0.0.0 (?!?!) Understanding now that this could be a firmware problem, I downloaded SX-EB700_tool from skytex. However, the program is suppose to detect the reader via usb, wich it does; then after clicking on "switch" it's suppose to gain access to the reader system... wich it doesn't, because after I press "switch", the reader switches off the screen and the blue led stays on. I believe that this can be a driver issue. Is there other way of getting v1.0.5 into the reader? PS: I have windows 7 64 home Thanx in advance |
Your lucky i was passing, hehe

I have the colourful skytex version on my ereader. I did have the firmware version thats in your link, but i prefered the skytex for eye candy. I use epubs and mobi files on mine and have no interest in using pdf files. I tried pdf, but just too messy to view. To reset the ereader, find a needle and use it to push the reset button in the hole on back of the ereader. I don't think you use the `switch` tab if i remember rightly. You should use the upgrade tab, and that will upgrade the img file in the `path` in the RK28 tool to the ereader. You do have the .img file to upgrade which is around 100 meg? |
Quote:
I don't have the firmware (100mb?!?) all I saw around the net was 10mb files, but no .img Also I cant open those hiden partitions you've been talking in this post. I tried with the upgrade tool for Primer from Skytex but it doesnt work. Do you have the files and programs needed for this? Or can you point me the links? Once again , thanx. |
I've found two versions of RK27 Device Manager. 1.4.0 and 2.5
Did you used one of this? |
Ok, i'm getting somewhere...
I've managed to unhide the partitions. The problem now is that when i open the img file (that I created with ultraiso) i get an error "Getting the version of loader failure". It could be a driver problem (I have windows 7 64bits.) or a badly made .img file. |
Time of dead... 3AM
Well, thats it. I tried the wrong firmware, and I've killed it. Now it doesnt even turn on or connect to pc. Guess i'm going to sleep and thing of a way how to tell my wife that i've crashed her reader. I think i'll blame the dog on this one... |
Have you tried the RESET button?
The links to the skytex firmware have changed since i d/loaded the firmware last. Seems the new loader/upgrader is looking for a img file but the skytex loader/upgrader is looking for a bin file instead. Heres what i used for the primer/skytex firmware, RK28DM I've uploaded it for you to download on the link below and it will load the .img file which you should have. Rk28DM 2shared - download RK28DM_Setup.zip |
Hello Trinity,
Thanx for the soft. The problem is that the reader is dead now. It wont turn on, even with reset, and so, the program your sent me cant access the drives. My only hope is noticing that when i connect it to the pc I get an "unkown usb device" from windows, wich tells me that theres some "ghost in the shell", maybe waiting for the proper driver. I've already posted in the "Dead players" section of this forum, and if I dont fix it, I'll be on the "Dead husbands" seccion lol. Anyway, if you have any idea in the meantime, please let me know. Thanx |
Have you tried the reset button while connected to pc, or try the reset buttun while its connected to the power adaptor.
Try holding the reset button for a few seconds. I've crashed mine lots. I even put the wrong firmware on it and thought i'd fried it, but always managed to get it running again. Does the RK28 upgrader i uploaded not recognize the player at all? Mine reads RK28 MSC in the RK28 software `Player` box. Or is yours blank when ereader is connected? |
It doesnt show anything,
only says "player not found" Do you have Windows 7 64 bits? |
No not win 7 64bit, im running winxp pro with servicepack 2 installed.
|
Nice, that means that could be a driver problem in win7 64.
I have to try in an xp pc. As soon as I find one I'll post the results here. Thanx. |
nope, still no live
In xp also detects usb unkown device |
Captain log 010620082011
Ok, I got news. I opened the "animal"and It seems that afterall the chip is 2738, not 2705 So, now it comes clear to me why the firmware didnt worked. My next objective is finding a suitable driver for 2738. Over and out... |
I just had a funny memory come to mind about 4 archos 405 players i killed when trying to wire them up to my motorbike so i could use the headcam i have for 8 hours of non stop footage. Each time i killed a achos, i would take it back to the shop and exchange it for free as i blew each one up within a few days of each other.
One of my excuses was, "you must have a bad batch of players love" and then shrugged my shoulders, lol Best thing about it was, that i blew 2 up on the kitchen top while the cam was connected to the archos and was in recording mode. There were clips of my face and me playing with bits of wire that were also attached to the achos players just before they went blank, and i had no way of formating the achos harddrive, lol, then you came to mind, lol I hope no one as found the clips and put them on youtube or something! So have you fixed it? or found the driver for the different chip yet? |
LOLOLOL...
Even if they found the clips, they laugh so much that they forgive you just for giving them I nice story to tell at home. I would. :) Not yet, no sign of a driver for this. But I found some guys who have the same problem and are searching. So I think that, all forces combined, it's a matter of time. |
