I also have this ebay 0.0.0.0 reader. tried the rk28 driver +the upgrade tool and does not recognise it.
so I did not try any Rk27 tool or drivers in fear of bricking( just got the stupid thing).

Do the skytex 1.05 etc versions help battery or visibily wise or they just add menu eyecandy?
Although I suspect our version wont upgrade...

You can access the 4 drives on the device via a program called "RK27 Device manager" but i`ve looked everywhere for firmwware updates and can't find anything. Well i thought i'd found some firmware, but it was wrong and now its crashed my ereader. And now i have no backup. lol
Whats the chances of getting the backfile from you as its the same device? Thats if you can extract it.

Hi Trinity, I have also brickedr by ebook. inside the rockchip version is 2738. This is 4gb black.
Where can I find the RK27 Device Manager - English version? With this software can you access the ebook drives even if the PC reports the device as unrecognised USB device? Which is happening to me now.

I have already downloaded the Skytex Primer firmware.
Now waiting for your reply.
Thanks.

Can't find the TTS (text to speech) tho that i had before when i first bought the player. Unless it only pops up with certain formats.
So now we have 3 firmware versions to play with :-)

Can you please let me know from where to download this firmware? I can't seem to find any download section? Thanks.

Here is original software, plus primer image file and rk27 + rk28 tools all in the zip folder.

2shared - download Ebook software.zip

I upgraded to the primer software because it looked better than the original software which looked boring.

I recently got one of these off a chinese site but the thing crashes whenever I try to change anything in the settings, the screen just fades away to white and I have to reset the device.

Should I try to upgrade the firmware (v1.01) or attempt a return?

Thanks

Same problem as Atreyu

Hi guys

I just received my chinese ebook reader yesterday and was working OK with the sample files.

I put some pdf's on it and some jpg files and was going to use it today but for some reason the letters in the menu overlapped, I press the reset button and the thing died.

Is not recognized by the computer (Vista), nor by RK27 or RK28 device manager. I tried pressing reset while connected to computer and the power charger but nothing happened.

I guess is the same thing that happened to Atreyu... Do you have good news for me?

Greetings

Can this reader use a USB Wifi Adaptor and ? driver

Hi All, espeically @Trinity and Nicolas72 ...

Very Interesting reading this threat. I have this reader branded as VIVID Model AEET100K with manufacturer name E3 Style Pty Ltd. I bought it a few weeks ago while away studying in Australia. It is the black 2Gb version with V1.0.5. I will prob? update the firmware to Skytex primer as suggested by Trnitiy - but first I need to crack it open to check which Chip is in it as there seems to be big probs for different chipsets to what Trinity has.

But I have another question - Can this ebook reader be enabled for Wifi using a USB wifi adaptor into the mini USB? And if so I should imagine it needs a driver for such adaptor (mine is a Netgear WG111v2) - and IF the OS is Linux (not Windows CE or the like) where can I get the driver for my adaptor? Has anyone attempted to make this ebook reader wifi capable? Does it need rooting? And would the architecture run a different OS which might be better?

I hope you smart guys and gals out there can enlighten me with this idea?

@Trinity
Hi T. Pls see post of yesterday re Wifi Adaptor and OS for this reader. Can you (or any of your resources in Europe) help?
Would be great to be able to access the internet with wifi and browse on it.

BTW my firmware has Adobe Mobile reader on it but no ability to play video formats. Is there some way to mix amd match the functions in the various firmware versions? I note that 8 or 9 months ago, Nicolas72 was doing some programing. Did he ever get any results?

Hi Daniel,
My model has the RK2729 chip (I think but not opened it up yet), and runs Linux OS, with 2Gb memory. I has Adobe Mobile reader loaded from new and it works fine for the pdfs I have loaded. I could try to get you a set of the firmware off my unit if I can follow the directions of earlier posters in this topic, but may not be for a few days yet.

I think the manufacturer could be Chuwi http://www.chuwi.com/index.asp who are now making an a much improved Android OS on RK2918 chip with cam and wifi, but an earlier model which I think was Model E700 (now replaced by higher speced P700) has the same casing as ours but no current reference now to ours (made late 2010/early 2011) on that site. There is some info on www.slatedroid.com, and on How to Clone Rockchip Firmware | eHow.com , and on http:\\gadgetsland.net where some of the earlier posters to this thread did purchase their version of our unit.

However another site http://www.techcular.com/mebook-touc...eatures-price/ lists the WHITE version as "Mebook Touch is the latest color touchscreen eBook Reader which has released from Chinavasion"; amd its hardware spec is identical to my black one.

I am happy with my unit (with no cam) except that I would like to make it wifi enabled. My recent posting were to find out -
1) If the RK2729 units can be rooted to host Android OS; or
2) leaving thje original Linux OS on, can Linus drive a USB wifi adaptor (with a suitable linux driver) to make it communicate through wifi to my home wifi router? I am Linux-challenged http://mympx.org/forum/images/icons/icon11.gif

Is there someone out there who can advise me on this Linux/Wifi/RK2729 issue?

For those still interested in this ebook and its chipset, I have posted a technical query with Rock-chip (Japan) and hope for a reply. The query was as follows -
Regarding the RK2729 chip in the ebook reader I have purchased (Brand Vivid - model AEET100K - suspected OEM from Chuwi or Mebook) -
1. Which OS will run on this chip? Linux? Android? Other?
2. If it will run Android, how to setup for lading andoid OS? and which version of Android? Will this make the usb function for wifi adaptor (eg Netgear) with a suitable Android driver?
3. If ONLY Linux can run, can usb port use an external USB Wifi Adaptor (eg Netgear) and a Linux/netgear driver so to make the ebook wifi capable?
4. Can you supply me a datasheet for the RK2729 chip?
Thank you
PG

"I can not get any stations here for whatever reason tho"
You have to put the earphones on whilst scanning for the radio stations, so my seller of the ereader told me, because your body then serves as antenna. Right he was: that s how you get radio stations..... also pick the right country before you start a scan. No good trying on "China" when you are in "Europe"......

dude wtf? the earphone wire acts as the antenna, not your body. your body can enhance the signal if you strip a wire out of the earphone and hold it (it creates a better earth)

the rest of your info is correct :)

Hey guys...
I have also had this chinese ebook reader for almost a month now.In general I am satisfied with it,but I was wondering if you all face the same problem I do.
It seems to have a difficulty in recognizing many styles of formatting. For example words written in italics appear in bold and after that the sentence continues in the next line without this being necessary.
Do you also have this problem and do you think that installing another firmware created by any of the companies selling it under their brand name could solve this problem?
Any opinion or idea on the matter is more than welcome.

Hi there, I received my ebook reader I purchased on e-bay today, and wanted to fix the problem with Adobe DRM, in my searches I came across this thread. I went to the skytex website and downloaded the primer application from there with no luck. The driver wouldn't install. So I downloaded the Ebook software tools Trinity kindly uploaded and followed the instructions enclosed however when I click switch the reader goes black and needs a reset before it starts again.

I've tried installing the drivers in windows 7 device manager by selecting add legacy hardware and choosing the 32-bit windows 7 driver however the dialog box that normally shows the driver name so you can click next is empty and the next button is greyed out. updating the driver from the unknown device says "Windows was unable to install your Unknown Device"

I'm at a loss as to how I can upgrade this, any advice thoroughly appreciated!

Wrong Chipset

I found the answer to my problem. I misunderstood my chip and found out that the chip inside is actually an RK2738. I bricked the machine by altering the USB ID strings in the driver but using the the instructions elsewhere on this site I managed to unblock it.

Now trying to find an update to the firmware on that Chip.

Thanks for letting us know about this.
Can you do us a favour and outline what you did to unbrick your player? That would be quite help to have it documented to help others in the future.

Unbrick RK2738

No problems I found the way to unbrick my RK2738 unit on the following thread on the firmware forum.

Just found a cure for my ereader. Seems the product as been rebranded under several different names. But when i bought it, there was no brand name and just called a Ebook with no site for updates.
So i tried different firmware software from different companies. I had nothing to lose as i'd killed my ereader. Its a habbit of mine to break things
Firstly i tried the Migear firmware upgrades and it worked a treat, but video player and something else was missing from the menu. I wanted my video player back!

Migear
MiGear eBook Reader ADOBE DRM license firmware upgrade

After more googling i found another company selling the same item. So went to their page and downloaded there firmware.
Skytex
SKYTEX - Downloads.

Found the .img file in the folders from skytex and i gave it a whirl. It worked a treat and now i have all the functions back and the menu looks 10 times better :-)
I used the RK28 Device manager to upgrade the .img files that were in the downloaded folders. Took about 90seconds to load and install the firmware to the device.
I wonder if the battery life is a little better?? Was only getting about 3 to 4 hours reading time!

My ebook menu now looks like this and i'm a happy bunny now :p

The radio on it is still useless tho........

Hi i have a china e-book that looks exactly like yours the chip inside is rockchip RK2738 v1.0.5 and i am having problemes with the internal memory( Flash ) when i copy some video on it all seems fine. I turn on the ebook try to access the file and it says no file on disk. When i replug the e-book to pc then the drive needs to be formated but unable to format with windows. I low level format end then re-format sometimes it works ans other times does not work. Is there a way to partition the flash memory. I tried to update with SKYTEX and RK28DM but does not work. Can you help me?
