Does anyone know of this E-Book reader and how to update the firmware on it ?
Hey folks,
Found this amazing site (China gadgets here i come ) while browsing the web searching for a way to flash my EBook Reader to its newest Firmware. I will include a picture of that thing here because you really cant go by model number or description alone. (When you check out the china wholesale sites you know why. Everyone uses their own little model scheme and description) It is a 7 Inch cPaper reader with builtin 2G of memory. The current firmware saya Rockchip RK2729 SDK Version V1.0.5. Thats one of em. My other reader (bought from the same store, same day) has 4g of builtin memory but its firmware says RK2729 SDK Version 1.0.. The 1.0.5 one works very well for my needs. It supports alot of different book types. Movies and sound files are also supported even tho this isnt the main reason why i bought it. The interesting thing is that both claim to support FM Radio as well. The new one (V1.0.5) doesnt but the older (V1.0.) has a radio menu where i can scan frequencies and so on. I can not get any stations here for whatever reason tho. Now my actual problem is that i want to have both with the same firmware V1.0.5 but i cant find a way to make the hidden partition visible. Ive tried the rkusb.tag and various other names but its a no go. I am running Linux with kernel 2.6.35-24-generic and when i probe the usb ports with lsusb i get: lsusb output Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 002: ID 071b:3203 Domain Technologies, Inc. So i can only mount the main /dev/sdd volume which is the user memory of the player. It is ok if i just want to copy or delete files on the reader but i cant get to the other partitions that most likely hold the system files. I hope someone has an idea of how to do that. Here is the picture of the player. Thanks in advance folks. Any comments or tips and tricks are welcome. http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/...011/Main-4.jpg |
I have bought 1 of thosee and have crashed it after playing with the firmware. Now it don't work lol
You can access the 4 drives on the device via a program called "RK27 Device manager" but i`ve looked everywhere for firmwware updates and can't find anything. Well i thought i'd found some firmware, but it was wrong and now its crashed my ereader. And now i have no backup. lol Whats the chances of getting the backfile from you as its the same device? Thats if you can extract it. |
Just found a cure for my ereader. Seems the product as been rebranded under several different names. But when i bought it, there was no brand name and just called a Ebook with no site for updates.
So i tried different firmware software from different companies. I had nothing to lose as i'd killed my ereader. Its a habbit of mine to break things :D Firstly i tried the Migear firmware upgrades and it worked a treat, but video player and something else was missing from the menu. I wanted my video player back! Migear MiGear eBook Reader ADOBE DRM license firmware upgrade http://dicksmith.com.au/media/DSAU/P...9831254889.JPG After more googling i found another company selling the same item. So went to their page and downloaded there firmware. Skytex SKYTEX - Downloads. Found the .img file in the folders from skytex and i gave it a whirl. It worked a treat and now i have all the functions back and the menu looks 10 times better :-) I used the RK28 Device manager to upgrade the .img files that were in the downloaded folders. Took about 90seconds to load and install the firmware to the device. I wonder if the battery life is a little better?? Was only getting about 3 to 4 hours reading time! My ebook menu now looks like this and i'm a happy bunny now :p http://www.meritline.com/images/prod...199-203_2_.jpg The radio on it is still useless tho........ |
Wow thats good to hear...
Hey Trinity,
I am glad that you got yours working again. I have been trying to extract the firmware from my device but since i am not using Windoze i cant run that RK28 Devicemanager. Tried using it under Wine but still no go. My problem wasnt as pressing since the reader still worked (works) its just that radio button thats useless. Maybe i should just install Windoze in either a seperate partition or on a a Stick or something. At that point it seemed a little bit of an overkill to do so. Once ive done so i will extract the firmware and post it here or email it to you or whatever is best. With all the different brands, modelnames etc out there its hard to get the right firmware hehe. I have even contacted my seller to ask for it but he just shrugs and says.. me not know.. So whats the firmware version of your ebook reader now ? V1.0.5 or lower, higher ? Hope to get around doing that this week. I didnt mess with the firmware yet since i couldnt make a backup and i didnt want to brick the reader lol Will keep you posted tho. Nicolas |
When i bought the ereader a couple of weeks back, the firmware version was 1.0.0. So thought i'd look to see if i could find an update. Thought i had found 1 but after i installed it, i realized i had installed wrong firmware and it crashed my ereader.
So went searching for details on the ereader and how to access the hidden drives and came across intructions from a site called mobileread.com, gave it a shot and bingo, the extra 2 drives appeared withe the other 2 drives, but i still i had try find the firmware as i'd screwed all system and backup files, and were not retrievable as i'd over writen them all. The skytex firmware is the same setup as the original, but with more eye candy, still no improvements on the radio and will not find any stations even setup for europe. Also the screen seems sharper and faster and plays all the formats as it did before. I'm happy with the skytex firmware, so no need for you to do me a backup of your ereader. Thx for the offer anyway :-) Right, time to get back to sorting out my 20.000 .epubs and .mobi ebooks with calibre.. Copied from Mobileread.com.... eBook readers based on the Rockchip RK2729 have 3 hidden partitions.
We can see (and then backup) 2. and 3. above using the following method:
Notes:
For other devices, other possible empty filenames, instead of rkusb.tag, to try are: - teclast.sys, FRK.TAG, HTC_001.Tag If you aren't comfortable messying around with your device's firmware, then don't! Proceed with extreme caution as there may be a slight chance you can "brick" your device if the above is preformed incorrectly. These instructions work for me, but I won't be held responsible for any damage done to your device by following them (or not!). |
Still not able to see hidden partitions.
I followed those steps before, with creating the rkusb.tag and whatnot.
There are references on the web about how to `unhide` those partitions with different names. rkusb.tag is just one of them but unfortunately it didnt do the trick for me. My steps : Find a Windoze computer. Win 7 in my case. 32 bit. Installed the special rkw27 usb driver (only got that option after hitting the switch button on the update tool) Now the player has its blue light on constantly and it recognized as Class for RK27 device under the device manager in windows. It didnt get an additional or new drive letter tho. In order to use the player again i have to press the reset button on its back otherwise nothing will happen. It wont even turn off. When i plug it in or unplug it it always gets detected but stops there. Without being able to backup my firmware its just too risky for me to upload that firmware that you have found. (Even tho i am darn tempted to do just that lol) I have had even less luck using my linux system. While in Windows i even checked with a partition tool to see if there might be a unrecognized one. But there wasnt any. I am kinda stomped on how to proceed from here. To have a backup would be nice in any case, even if i dont update it. Better to be safe than sorry lol Maybe you have some more tips for me. Regards Nicolas |
I've tried to repeat the operation again to view the 2 hidden drives, but for some reason i can`t seem to do it again.
I've looked everywhere trying to find a answer to access the drives, but with no luck. I think the backup/img file on the device originally was a .rkw file which used the rk27 devivce manager to upload, but the version i have now on the device is from skytex website and is a .img backup file and users the rk28 device manager, file size is around 100meg, it also gives the unbranded device a name now which is called Premer. The original firmware version was 1.0.0, and this firmware i have now is version 1.0.0.1 so the rk28 reads, but device reads it as 1.0 I managed to crash it again while trying to get to view the 2 hidden drives while playing with software. I used the rk28 and skytex .img file again which restored the device in less than 2mins. Personally i prefer the skytex software and it does seem to run better and looks/feels better, even at startup it as some animation while booting up, and when plugged into usb, it shows a icon which looks cool instead of the cable/pc picture which used to show up. If you do go with the skytex firmware, make sure you backup all your media files as it might be wiped while updating, and proberly best to use a windows system when updating the firmware to be safe. Also skytex will proberly have more firmware updates later on their site, so you would be better off with the skytex setup. |
I am going to leave it alone for a while..
This whole firmware flashing and unhiding partitions is a nice time sink lol
BUT I think for now i will leave it be because i cant make a backup and to be honest to risk of bricking it even with the skytex firmware is just too high for me. Ive waited 4 weeks for that ebook gadget to come here and well it would be a shame to risk that. I think what we would need is a usb boot partition reader or something like that. As i said before under windows 7 it is possible to install the drivers for the device but then it just sits there. Maybe someone else comes up with a way to do it. I will be monitoring the skytex site though and maybe one day when i feel adventurous i will give it a whirl. That it would be so difficult to read the system files off it actually surprises me. Talking to my seller yielded no results hehe..I am not surprised there either. Thanks for all your effort though. I really appreciate it. In case there are any news..post them here please. (ordered some mp3/4/5/6/7/8/9 whatnot) players and this is going to be a nice challenge to lol. Regards Nicolas |
Oh the temptation..
Ok,
I have to admit that i am still very tempted to just flash the ereader with the skytex firmware. There is just one little details that still gives me pause and that is the supported languages. On the skytex website it lists the main languages but not portuguese. So i am not sure if it supports it. In case you are reading this Trinity could you please be so kind as to check with your current one ? Furthermore i have been unable to find any other usable firmware sites for it. Googling yielded alot of results for the similar design but well its a gamble lol. Going directly to rockchip was a dead end too since they only design the hardware but not the UI or what the kind of case and buttons the final factory puts into that thing. Some sites suggest to open the unit up and short out a few pins on some chips to access the firmware partition. ( I can see the result already that i would be getting lol) Anyways, if you could verify that portuguese is indeed in the languages menu i will update it. Regards Nicolas |
Lol.
Yes skytex supports portuguese and another 18 other lauguage on the device. And when you download the software, you will have all the tools within the package to upload the firmware to your device. I don't know what the battery life is like on yours, but i'm getting around 4 hours of reading time before i have to charge it up again. How about yours? |
Ok then i am gonna try it lol
Well one thing is for sure...you never cease to learn lol.
Concerning the FM not working on my old player, uhm..I just found out that it uses the headphones as an antenna and of course i tried it without it. Now its working...cough cough. In my defense i have to say that it didnt mention that anywhere in the manual or on sites or whatnot. Anyways I will flash it with the skytex one. Ok battery time. Before using it for real i drained the battery 3 times at least to get its full charging capacity so right now i am looking at like 6-7 hours reading with medium backlight on. Maybe you should drain it completely as well a few times and then charge it for 5-6 hours at least (so longer even if the blue light stays on indicating its fully charged) I actually went through all the trouble of installing WindozeXP on my computer (Horror) but still i cant see the other partitions, so i suppose i just RK28 Device Manger it then. Off topic, my other trophies arrived yesterday from Chinaland..Mp3 player. Neat little thing but i got scammed the other way around. On the product it says 2Gig.. Linux and windows partition manager insists tho that it is 8Gig.(Ofc it isnt) Did all the known tricks on it as well but no go lol..my luck. I am not going to worry about it because by just making a 2Gig partition and leaving the other 6Gig as unallocated works just fine. Another lesson learned. But what can i say, I totally adore those gadgets lol. Anyways... I hope your battery life is going to improve a little bit at least. Regards Nicolas |
I tried the headphones with radio, but still no luck. Digital radio is not very good here in the uk anyway!
I also put the back light on low, and also have black background and white writing for reading as a black background does not use so much power as would a bright white background does. I like gadgets too, but no money to spend on them at the mo due to work being quiet. My last gadget i bought before the ereader was a archos 405 a couple of years back which i attached to a helmet cam. I can record 8 hours none stop while i'm out riding on my bike at good quality, but since my bike as been broke the past year, i've turned to reading to pass the time instead, lol I'll try and run down the battery completely on the ereader and see if the charge last any longer. I'm not one for mp3 players. I like loud music, so a jvc amp and a couple of big speakers connected to my pc, plus winamp 2 playing my mp3 collection is all i need Also been playing with 2 damaged micro sd cards that i was given to try fix, but with no luck. I've tried lots of different software to format, tried deleting the partitions etc.. even tried them in my cameras, ereader, archos, nokia phone, but they will not format in either of the devices. Pity as 1 is 16 gig and the other 8 gig. My ebook collection is 10gig (13,000 ebooks) so would have been nice to get the all on my ereader. |
The same old problem lol
Well i tinkered around a bit more with my reader (the fact that i couldnt get the firmware out of it was just simply bothering me like crazy)
With WinXp on my system i am able to see 2 drives as soon as i connect the player to the computer but only one is accessible. So far so good. One is the actual player memory and the other one is the `hidden` partition. But apparently i cant read it with any of those programs we talked about earlier. The RK27usb.inf is installed (even tried RK28usb.inf but same result) Even tried those TAG things again but no go, unless i am totally incompetent (wouldnt surprise me) When it says turn player off completely i assume they just want me to hold the off button on it till it says goodbye and so on. The manual on those things arent very clear on that. It is just weird that its so easy to flash the drive but not get the old firmware out of it first. That skytex program is nice and well documented but why the heck cant they just make a backup first lol. This is beyond me lolol. Anyways... I am really satisfied with the reader though. Calibre recognized it as a K6/K7 and managing my books with it is easy as pie. The only problem is with very large PDF or ePubs. Very large meaning over 10Mb. They open but it takes forever to advance a page or zoom, rotate. I might just order another one to really dissect it and solve that darn firmware backup problem. Right now i am just waiting for my Tablet PC with Android 2.2 lets see how screwed up that thing is lolol. I really do miss WiFi and maybe a touchscreen on it. How is your battery life doing now ? Regards Nicolas |
Hello, i've bought Mebook 7" ebook reader supermediaplayer... practically the same as your
my firmware is v 1.05 and through this forum I learned of the new firmware v1.1 is difficult to install? in the case of brick? |
Quote:
I have noticed that there is a couple of things missing from this skytex firmware. It used to play most video formats including divx and xvid .avi files, and also had text to speech, but since updating to skytex firmware, it will not play xvid videos, but plays divx files fine, and text to speech is also missing, not that it was much use anyway. I've had a look around but can't find the text to speech settings in this firmware, so i assume its not there. At the end of the day, i bought it for ebooks, and it works great with epub and mobi format/ebooks, so i'm still happy |

If you have a found a different firmware than skytex or migear's, then, i'd be happy to test it on mine, and i'll let you know if any smoke comes out the thing or not, lol Got any links to different firmware i can test? :-) |
Sorry, i was wrong, it still plays xvid avi files ok :-) I must have had a dodgy video.

Thanks, for skytex what the improvements are from it 1.05 to the 1.1? can you also be installed the migear? what the improvements? It's possible to have a copy of firmware 1.05? |

I tried the migear firmware, but certain things from the menu were missing, then i found skytex which had everything like it did before except the text to speech. Skytex as better icons and seems to run a little quicker. No improvement on the radio tho. The only real difference with skytex firmware is the colours and a few tweaks minus text to speech, other than that, its the same as the original version. I'm not sure where to find version 1.05. The Mebook, primer, and migear are all the same hardware i assume, but with different firmware and brandings. I've tried the migear and skytex and all work ok, but skytex is what i prefer rather than the original firmware. |
Heres the Migear firmware. Notice videos, radio and record missing from the menu.

I had the original software on mine but there was no site to update the firmware and no brand name as i'd bought it off ebay. Then i found migear site and tried all their 3 firmware types 100 101 and 102 all installed ok and worked but bits missing from menus even tho the layout was the same. Then i found skytex site and tried their firmware which installed with no probs, think i'll be sticking with skytex firmware. Thats about all the info i have. Maybe later 1 of the companies will add some more updates. I've looked for more info but can't find any at the mo. My opinion is that the skytex 1.1 firmware works for me. |
firmware skytek is the same of mine?

Where can I find firmware for mebook?
Also when you guys read pdf book, how do you move inside the page? I mean the screen is not long enough to display whole page so I read it in landscape mode, how do you change from top half to bottom half(specially in skytex firmware)? Thanks! |
how to charge via USB?
now it's always the way to transfer files |
In windows, safely remove those 2 drives, but do not unplug the reader, the blue light will start to blink, it means that it's charging.

sure? the image with pc disappears?

Back from holiday and finally got my original firmware extracted..
Hey folks,
During my holiday i gave the whole firmware / hidden partition / frustration a bit more thought and i came up with the idea of just checking the firmware of the Skytex site. Remember when you said that you could not reproduce the hidden partitions to show up Trinity ? Well the solution is that the TAG file has changed. So i checked out the primer firmware in the hopes to get a new TAG name reference and BINGO. Its HTC_E01.Tag. Create a file in your root and it should work for your skytex / primer firmware as well. Anyways i have tried to contact the manufacturer about the firmware and or tools that can be used to even slightly modify it. Turns out that the chinese dont like it when you want to mess with a proprietary hard/software so there was no response whatsoever (even using Chinglish witgh google translator) Thay are always eager to sell but then shoot themselves in the foot with lousy customer support. Btw Trinity are you still interested in the original Firmware ? If so i can post it here in the download section. Take a look at the new Gemei GM2000 Touchscreen 7 Inch ebook reader. That thing is awesome...bricked mine already lolol. I dont know if i can post links here but try either ¸èÃÀÊýÂë¿Æ¼¼ or any of the gadget sales sites. I am just glad i bought 2 of those things (one for wifey one for me and guess who got the bricked player now...guess) Yall take it easy now Nicolas |
yes, the image with pc disappears and blue led start to blink

Thanks for the new tag file name, I will try it on my ebook. If you can upload the original firmware, that would be great. Does your support mkv file? |
Posted the Firmware for V1.0.5
Ive submitted the firmware file for the ebook reader yesterday.
I dont know if it needs to be approved or something because it does not show up under downloads yet. So lets wait and see what happens. Now i am actually stuck at the modding part of the player. Seems like all the Tools out there cant handle the bmp0.bin properly because some of the images are RLE encoded.(smaller ones are ok but bootup and shutdown sequences are garbled still) Anyways hope the file helps someone. (I can post the file with radio support as well if need be) Regards Nicolas |
I tried the tag name HTC_E01.Tag and it works great. Thanks!
I am also trying to do some modding too: I tried to setup the hot key in pdf reading so we do not need to press the directional key all the time to move inside the page. I do not know if it's easy to do. I am only familiar with C# coding. Do you know what is the os for this thing? Is it Linux? Thanks Hao |
Just tried the tag file with the skytex firmware and yes it works :-) I now have all 4 drives showing. Good work!
You say you have original firmware uploaded somewhere? Would love a copy of it if poss to have a play with. Also the skytex firmware does play xvid, divx avi and mkv files. |
If you can't upload the oringinal firmware here, then you could upload at this site for download to share.
2shared - file upload |
Firmware uploaded here
Hey Trinity,
You can find the firmware here in the download section. Its the current v1.0.5 one that i have without radio support. I suppose i could upload the other one as well if you really need it but the radio is actually more than just useless in my opinion. Nice sales gimmick but thats about it. As far as the modding is concerned. It all depends on what you want to mod. If it is just the icons (UI) then there are already some tools out there to help you with it. Since the Rockchip RC27xx is a proprietary system, they all have pros and cons. Images are best modded with the RK27UIEditor even tho it has some problems with the big bmp`s such as startup and shutdown images. (Reason is that those are most likely RLE encoded to save on space and none of the tools seem to be able to handle that kind of encoding.) Regular icons are easily replaced, you just have to be careful with transparency. Another problem is that the stringid has to match the images in case you want to add and not just replace some images. Right now i am writing my own code to easily add images and stringid`s but its a slow process because datasheets and info on structure are hard to come by. Really coding new features into the firmware is hard because it seems to be based on a ARM CPU and compiling it to actually running it are two different things. Ok there are RockChipEmulators out there (google it..RockChipEmu i think) but i still have to get one working for me. With the ebook from Gemei (Gm2000) it is a lot easier since its based on the Ingenic Chipset and they work closer with the open source community than rockchip does. Most of the programs you will find are reverse engineered and hence aimed at a specific firm/hardware so i would not trust them to be useful for that exact ebook reader that we have. To add more features to PDF for instance is `double trouble` because both are proprietary formats. The PDF and Rockchip heh so its even harder. So if i were you i wouldnt worry about it really. Just convert the PDF into mobi or epub. (Use Calibre for that ..works like a charm) Maybe tomorrow i can upload the tools that i have collected. Some are in native chinese so its like click and try most of the time lol. Also it seems like the modding community is doing either 10000 million different things at once or none at all. Lots of the tools come without source code so you have to invent the wheel 10 times over and frankly it gets a bit tedious after the 5th time. Anyways as soon as i have more success or come across something that is helpful i will let yall know here. Regards Nicolas |
I found the download you put up and downloaded it, and then converted to a .img file and tried it. It worked a treat and DOES have the radio within the firmware.
Can't find the TTS (text to speech) tho that i had before when i first bought the player. Unless it only pops up with certain formats. So now we have 3 firmware versions to play with :-) |
Oops it does have radio ?
Heh i suppose i got a little confused then with my firmware images here.
But hey all good i suppose. So if you need the one WITHOUT radio let me know lol. I have never bothered with text to speech because it is just ugly when comes out of it. If i want an audiobook i get an mp3 audiobook, then again i dont need a ebook reader to actually listen to it just a simple mp3 player. I agree it nice to have those features but only if it really makes sense and work right lol. Last week a friend of mine bought a car GPS system that can play games..hmmm oook.. I mean its nice lol but well you get my point. Regards Nicolas |
