SOLVED!! DivX/AVI problem with AMV

I have PocketDivXEncoder and have used it to encode some Quicktime clips into AVI files for playback on a Palm. After installing AMV Converter 3.57, these AVI files now playback at double speed in Windows Media Player (Version 10) with voices sounding like Mickey Mouse on Helium and I can't adjust the speed. I have the current DivX player and they playback on this fine but with no sound. What's going on? Is there an incompatability problem somewhere? Any ideas?

My AMV files playback fine on the PC and my MP4 player. AMV Converter itself can't convert quicktime files though and comes up with an error message. I have Quicktime 7 - latest version.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Re: DivX/AVI problem with AMV

SteveM,

This sounds like a codec issue.
Try this:
1- uninstall amv conv. 3.57.
2- download and install Media Player Classic here :

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/vi...er_classic.cfm

3-Re-install amv conv. 3.68, or 4.00, not 3.57

Personally, I never use Windows Media Player because a) It's bloatware, and b) it's call home feature let's uncle Bill know what you're viewing, etc.
Leave it installed for the codecs it contains but go into Windows Media Player preferences and de-select all file types.
Media Player Classic is far superior simply because it plays virtually all file types E.G. RM, RA, MOV, QT, MPEG1 MPEG2 VOB. ETC. and Mr. Gates has no idea what you're doing. ;>)

Good luck !
As always..... " please post your results / successes' or none of us will learn anything"......

Try this tool for converting your Quicktime files. It's FREEWARE. :D

MediaCoder download from here.

Or RAD Video Tools (video file converter) download from here.

I think the double speed problem seems like a Codec problem. You can also try downloading and installing the SLD Codec Pack 2.2 from here. See if that helps solve your problem.

This codec pack also has Windows Media Classic. I agree with Iridium - Windows Media Player is very bloated and waste of resources. I use Media Player classic all the time as it loads a lot faster and players my videos faster and easier to fast forward, rewind etc....

I've dowloaded SLD Codec and will try this tonight after work. Will also upgrade to 3.68. Many thanks for the tips. Will let you know how it goes. Appreciate the help.

Re: DivX/AVI problem with AMV

Thanks everyone. Problem sorted. It must have been a codec issue. Removed 3.57 and installed 3.68. I also installed SLD Codec pack. Media Player Classic is great! I still had the problem after this but after many trials altering the settings in PocketDivXEncoder I can now encode quicktime movie clips off my camera into 320x240 DivX files for my PDA. I can also then use AMV Converter to put them onto my AMV player!!!

They play back fine in Media Player Classic and in Windows Media Player.

Thanks for the help! Great site too! I'm not that techie but it's all explained well.
