[solved] AMV conversion
Hi all
Recently I downloaded a movie (AVI) file from the net of abt 700MB and got it converted to AMV format using AMV converter 3.68, no problem it got converted fully. Then I copied a DVD movie using DVD shrink on to my hard drive and converted the VOB files to AVI using PocketDivxEncoder. When I am trying to convert that AVI file to AMV, after converting to about 140MB it gives the error DISK FULL. Not able to fix the error. I have lot of DVD's which i want to convert to AMV files. Can anyone help. Out of curiosity, r there different AVI formats? regards Prasanna |
prasanna, I do not know about different AVI formats but it is possible to use different encoders, DiVx, XViD, ffdshow, Windows Media Encoder are a few I am aware of. You could try uninstalling your codec pack and trying ffdshow codecs.

Re: AMV conversion
Hi tadad1
I have installed K-lite codec pack and will try converting today. Will update u once I am done with it. prasanna |
Prosanna what you need to get the most out of your dvd is PocketDVD converter. You can convert DVDs to small avis quite easily. then it is a matter of minutes using amv tool.
they are astonishingly good quality too! mail me on metalhead@onvol.net , and I will send you the Pocket DVD converter. Cheers |

Re: AMV conversion
Hi vegas
I am first saving the file to my hard drive.During that process only it gives the error DISK FULL.Any more suggestions what to do? :( prasanna |
prasanna,
I think the PocketDivxEncoder software might be the cause of the problem..... Try a different software program to encode your VOB files to .AVI then use the AMV Convert Tool to convert to .AMV. Try that and let me know. |
Re: AMV conversion
Hi Admin
Can u name any software other than PocketDvixEncoder. where can i get them. Prasanna |
Re: AMV conversion
One thing I noticed from the log files of Pocket DivX Encoder was it was somehow executing "./mencoder.exe" even though that program was not in the Windows XP path. This tells me that the programmers have somehow embedded some version of mencoder.exe within their own EXE file, possibly as a fake RAM disk (like many Linux distributions). This could cause memory fragmentation on some PCs.
I never experienced the DISK FULL problem and I only have 512MB on my Windows XP conversion PC. To help diagnose the problem, perhaps you should provide this info: (1) Which Windows version you are running (2) How many MB of RAM on your PC (3) What CPU in your PC (4) How much disk space left on your C: drive (5) Path to where you save your Pocket DivX Encoder output file BTW, never make AMV conversion files directly to your chiPod (the files will be too fragmented). Always copy from hard disk to chiPod. As a pre-convertor program alternative, try mencoder264 freeware: It seems slower than Pocket DivX Encoder but ultimately produces slightly better quality AVI-to-AMV files. The downside is that I have not found a way to increase color saturation, brightness, contrast, etc. although it does have an optional mencoder parameters (none documented) field. http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9...264full5eu.gif |
Re: AMV conversion
Hi vegas
Thanks for ur detailed reply... for ur questions (1) Which Windows version you are running I am using windows 2000. (2) How many MB of RAM on your PC My laptop has 512 MB RAM. (3) What CPU in your PC My CPU has Intel Mobile Centrino processor. (4) How much disk space left on your C: drive C: drive has 2 GB space. But normally i dont install programs in C: drive I install them in D: drive, it has abt 4GB free space. My total hard drive is of 40GB capacity and i divided them into 4 partitions C,D,E,F. (5) Path to where you save your Pocket DivX Encoder output file I save them in the D: drive and sometimes in the F: drive. Both drive have more than 2GB free space. I never save the file directly into my player. The diskfull problem comes when i use the AMV converter tool and not during PocketDvixEncoder. Will try with the new software u have given and post the results. regards prasanna |

I suspect that the problem is a full C: drive caused by temporary and cached files. Even though you don't install your programs on C:, many programs, including your internet browser(s) still store temporary files on C: Try this: first clear cached and temporary files from your web browser(s). Even if you don't use it often, open MS Internet Explorer, click on TOOLS-->Internet Options-->General-->Delete Files and click OK. Then, if you have the Firefox web browser, open it, click on Tools-->Options-->Privacy-->Cache-->Clear Cache Now and click OK. Next, close your web browser(s). For Windows 2000, click Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Disk Cleanup Choose C: and click OK. Your may also want to "defragment" C: There may be more you can do to cleanup in Windows 2000 but I haven't used it in a while. After all that is done, see how much space you have on C: If it is not at least the higher of 400MB or double the size of your AVI file, you will still likely have problems. If you have at least 400MB (or double AVI) on C:, try AMV Converter again. UPDATE: [color=blue]For Windows 2000, I'd probably just download some freeware cleanup software and run that first before running AMV Converter on your PC. Maybe someone else can recommend a good cleanup tools for Windows 2000. |
Re: AMV conversion
Hi Vegas
I will do all that u have said thanks for ur detailed explanation. Will update the results after doing all these. regards prasanna |
Vegas215.com,
This problem seems to have no actual connection to real disk space I have 52GB free space on C:Drive and run 2GB of Ram and on occasions have also had the problem but not on a consistant basis. At the moment the error does not occur however I have no idea why or what I am doing differently other than not using PocketDivxEncoder to pre-convert to .avi. |
Re: AMV conversion
Hi tadad1
can u tell me which software ur using for converting to AVI or if possible tell me where I can get.I will try with that. Prasanna |
prasanna, Try CCleaner I have found it effective at clearing out unwanted files and have never had any problems with it. It seems to be affilliated with Yahoo so just be sure to select the "do not install Yahoo search bar" option during setup.

I convert to AVI with DVDx which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to convert a full length movie. http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ease_id=141177 Then I pass the AVI through VirtualDub and crop, resize and deinterlace which takes about 6 or 7 minutes. Them I convert to AMV |

Re: AMV conversion
tadad1 thanks for the link i downloaded and installed the software. Can u tell me the settings u normally follow while converting a DVD.It will be helpful otherwise i have to play around.
prasanna |
Re: AMV conversion
Firstly go to File>Skin Theme and change the skin because the default one makes the interface to hard to follow. I have not fully explored the settings and have only made minor adjustments to the default settings as follow.

Hello Guys I need help on downloading AMV Converter. Re: AMV conversion
hi tadad1, I have installed DVDx and right now converting a full movie of abt 2 hrs 45 min duration.
Till now it has converted around 1 hr 25 min pf the movie. It is showing 13% completed. How long does it take for u to convert a movie fully? what to do next once i get this avi? prasanna |
prasanna, Approximately an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters but it would depend on your systems specifications. Your movie of 2 hrs 45 min possibly a bit longer.
After it is converted I load it into VirtualDub and resize, crop, deinterlace and set start and finish points removing credits etc . If you open your AVI in virtualDub and then select Video>Filters you will be presented with a list of filters. Select resize and set it to your desired size, you will also be able to crop it to remove black areas top and bottom, I also crop a small amount off the sides to keep it roughly 4x3. Then select the deinterlace filter at it's default setting then save as AVI. It should take 8-10 minutes to complete then convert to AMV. |
Re: AMV conversion
Hi tadad1 and admin, Finally ....atlast i think i found the solution for my problem.Yesterday I downloaded the software DVDdecryptor and autoGK and converted using them into xvid avi format, i converted about half of the movie and the avi file i set to custom size 700mb, though the process took me around 4 hrs them i converted the avi to amv without any problem. The quality was very good. Now i am converting the whole movie if there is no problem i will post the steps i carried out.
If u tell me how to upload the software in the forum i can upload them so that others can use it.AutoGK is about 9MB file. I think the sound quality and picture quality of AMV file is very good. prasanna |
Re: AMV conversion
Guys, Finally finally ....i tink i have succeded in my attempts. Thanks for all ur support.
What I figured out regarding DISKFULL problem is it has nothing to do with the AVI files doesnt matter which tool u used for conversion. I adopted this technique for solving this problem i split my AVI files into many parts of 200MB each and then converted them to AMV using the converter. Vola ....no problem it converted. The other way is load the AVI file in the converter and split the file into 2 or 3 parts by specifying the start and end points. This also worked. Hope this helps other guys. prasanna |
prasanna
Interesting.... The thing is, I was able to convert a full length movie (Finding Nemo) of original size 700MB DivX to .AMV find and it plays on my player with no "disk full" message........ So you're saying to solve your problem, you just split the .AMV up to 2-3 parts and it plays ok on your player? |
Re: [solved] AMV conversion
Admin, I didnt split the AMV file, I split the AVI into 3 parts say if it is 700MB when I try to convert it without splitting then the error comes, so I split it into 3 parts and converted each part to AMV this time there was no error.
