Default AMV Video Quality

I just got an Ipod clone with a 1.8" screen and I am playing around with video conversion on it. Using the AMV converter version 4 I converted a Spongebob episode I ripped from one of my DVD. I used the 160x128 resolution to make it fit the screen. It converted fine and plays on my MPX player. The player came with a sample video file named I love sky1.8 and the quality of it seems much better than what I got from my DVD. Any ideas why this might be. Did they use a different conversion tool or maybe their sourse was better? Don't know if the input file makes a difference with AMV converter as far as quality goes. Although I was able to convert some MPG files off my hard drive with it when I ripped the DVD to a MPG the AMV converter choked bigtime when I tryed the conversion. I ripped it to AVI and the converter worked fine with it. Any Ideas? Thanks!

VRaptor, I got into the habit of converting everything to AVI before putting it through the converter found it easier in the longrun.

The AMV converter is not particularly good at resizing and changing frame rate though, I found I got much better quality conversions by running my AVI files through VirtualDub to resize to 160x128 and set frame rate before conversion to AMV.

This may help:

Thanks for the quick reply. After I posted I read your tutorial on virtualdub and downloaded it to try some preprocessing. Do you think they did some preprocessing on I love sky to get the quality better? You suggested 16FPS so I take it that is the default for these players.

VRaptor, Different converters run at different fps depending on the AMV size. I can't remember what fps version 4.0 uses for 160x128. Run one of your converted AMV files on your PC using the AMV player and while it is running right click on the picture and select properties and you will see what frame rate the conversion is.

I did as you suggested and my computer reports 16 FPS. The filters do make the quality a bit better. However, changing the bit rate in VD made the audio and video out of sync and resizing in VD made it come out in a letterbox type format so I left those 2 off and converted it again and it came out right.
