Default [solved] file format error when playing .avi file

Click the image to open in full size.

I recently bought this mp4 player off from ebay.

I tried to convert some video with the included software that came with the included disc but had no success. I've tried downloading other video converters off the internet but have had no luck. The working video that came on the player was an .avi file but the description on ebay said that it played .mtv and .avm files. Every time I put and .avi file on the player it shows up in the video list but when I try to play it, it says "file format error". Any help would be appreciated. It's got a 2" screen if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help.

There are basically 2 camps of video formats
these "MP4 Players" can play.

AMV or often called MTV (Example: Video.AMV)

SMV sigmatel Motion Video (Example: Video.SMV)

Each camp requires the use of "Their Converter"
to convert AVI/MPG and a few others video formats to their format.

These converter programs are not so much branded with a name.

AMV is generally branded as: MP3 Player Utilities 3.68 to 4.09 and include a player to actually play
the converted video.

SMV might be branded as Video2SMV or SMV Transcode. No player software to confirm or test
the conversion.

I am betting you have a SMV player. Their Converter software is the problem not the players.
Generally, there are memory leaks and non-responding. I loved the www.machspeed.com player just hated the converter. Found several
versions all with the same bugs. But did find
a version that does work

http://www.picnroll.com/us/downloads..._Converter.exe

So you SMV users try this version I got most of
my full length movies converted.

Kaser MamboMano 1.8 LCD 2gig player uses AMV
Great buy at Fry's Electronics for $49.99 USD
Currently sold out.

This is my 4th MP4 Player the others I have given
to friends more as an MP3 Player for audio and not so much for Video playback.

I do own a real Apple Video iPod 30 Gig just hate
letting the kids use it :=)

I've converted to MTV, AMV, SMV. I've downloaded almost every MP3tool I can find and none of the converters seem to work for me. The video that came loaded on the player was an .avi file and i've tried converting everything I have to that format. I've changed the ratio and it still never works. Does anybody have any suggestions??

I've tried AVIconverter 2.0 and 4.0.. still no luck with the final outcome. My screen just shows "file format erro" .. is there anybody who can e-mail me a sample video that might work on my player so that I can test it out??

Hey, can you upload and link to the file that worked? That would let me try and make a file that works for you. My player is also picky, but the resolution is different so I couldn't just send you one of mine.

yarock, I, too, had bad luck with AVConverter. My solution was to use a different program. Cost me a couple of dollars, but you get what you pay for.

I get the feeling that some things need to be tweaked in the profiles more regularly than folks might think. It may work well enough, but there will still be some players that whine.

If we can get both the sample that worked and then one of the conversions that didn't, maybe we can help find the setting that is out of whack?

Hi,
Join the club!!

In another thread I have been airing the same problem. My player has a different button arrangement but is otherwise the same. It came with no software. I have been trying to get the supplier to tell me where to obtain the correct software but so far no joy.

The instruction book says AVIConverter 2.

I have tried both version 2 and 4. Both have the same problem.
The converted video is 224(width) x 176(height) - (for the 2" screen). The conversion plays fine using VLC media player.

The player appears to require (Obtained from Windows Summary) 176(width) x 220 (height) - note the 220.

I modified the Converter.ini file by swapping the figures round to get the width and height figures correct (but it does not rotate the the actual picture) and that's when I found it rejects 224 and needs 220.

However the file still fails to actually play correctly. Instead of giving a "file format error", it displays the first frame or so then there is a click on the sound and it jumps to the next video file (the supplied one).

So far I have not been able to find a program to do the job.

(see also "AVIConverter.ini file posted by Grindathotte-Help !!" thread.
