AMV format

Does anyone know what the file format of the AMV video format is? It would be nice to have conversions without windows mwedia player, and especially without windows. It would be nice to get an mplayer/mencoder codec for these movies? Given the simplicity of these mp4 players, it should be a pretty simple video format.

Even though the playback quality is mainly dependent on you MP's graphics processing chip, wich defines the frame rate, and you screen, wich defines the colour quality.
