Both programs (viDrop and especially AVIConverter) works internally with xvid and MP2, then that's not your problem. If resolution is ok for your player (220x176, 320x240) your problem is turn resulting video in 90°, which is properly managed by viDrop. To use AVIConverter a especial version of AVIConverted is needed.
If you have a working video I suggest you to investigate its parameters using a tool called G-Spot.
