Use the MTV conversion to 160x120 or 160x128 only when you are converting a full-screen 4-by-3 program. Try 160x96 for wide-screen, and 160x64, to minimize the squishing/stretching problem.
If you don't like the alternate resolutions, an alternative is to convert the file to an aspect ratio of approximately 4-by-3 by cropping (not stretching) prior to the MTV conversion. This can be done with AviSynth or VirtualDub (or both together).
