So to double check, you can't convert videso so they play on your player properly, is that right?

Try downloading viDrop and it should convert your videos fine. The thing with Rockchip based players is that you need to have the videos at a certain width x height resolution so it players, otherwise you will get "Format Error" messages.

What screen size is your player?

Got to be more to it then screen size.
The video that came with my MP4 player is 320x240.
when I convert a different .avi to this size it says format error.
edit--
What's the codec you use for your .avi?

Yes the audio is usually mp2 for Rockchip 26xx series, not mp3.

Download the video samples and try them in turn on your player, they work like a charm, the sample that plays correctly will display the correct settings for viDrop. :-)

I tried ViDrop with PAL Rockchip 320x240 settings with a DVD and it works on my player.
But when I tried to convert a small .avi file it says format error.
Does a video need audio for it to play on the MP4 Player?

Dear Stew,

on RK26xxA-Players the video must fill out the complete Screensize:

Please use this "Extra Mencoder"-Parameter in vidrop:

-vf-add expand=320:240:-1-1:1

Smaller videos will be 2- or 4-side-borderd, if they don't match the full screensize. rgrds, lca77

I converted my DVD of Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds. wonder how many people I can annoy with it on a train

edit--
How do you improve picture quality so it's less "blocky"?

Set the "Motion Search precision" on the value 6. Raise up the videobitrate, but it must be in a multiple factor of the audiobitrate. An example: the Audiobitrate is 128, so the videobitrate should be 256, 384 or 512. If you're raising to high, the synchronization could fall off again.

small problem. I put it up to 6 and 512. quality is good. but dark, black areas are still blocky.
I can never remember why it does it or how to fix this.

this blocky is also down to screen quality, bad and cheap screens will kill dark areae4s and 512 is still very low quallity mad worse by low quality screen, cant really go any higher woth these older rockchips though im afraid
