Smaller video?

I just got a new 3.5" video player and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for what video/conversion program to use. I already had a couple of 2.8" players but they were very picky what they would play, took too long to convert, and the files were too large, so I never wound up using them much.

The new player is an Emerson emp313-4. It seems to be a re badge of the mp3500 here(in fact the warranty address is to southern telecom so its the same company though maybe a different revision).

The manual says it can play WMV / RMVB / MPEG1, 4 / FLV / DIVX / XIVD 320x240 3:4
I tried an mpeg2 file (full size, not resized down), and it wouldn't even recognize the file (no shock there, it only says mpeg1/4).
so I tried nero digital (which has limited settings). Nero digital is basically their own version of mp4. In mobile mode, it gave me a 216Mb file that was 176x96 (which surprisingly played fine though the video quality was a bit low). It re-sized to the full screen automatically in the player. In portable mode it gave 352x192 which played fine and looked good but file size was about 700MB (audio was a bit low which matters because the internal speaker is not that big). I tied knocking the bitrate down to get a 250MB file but the audio went out of sync.
Nero also has options for nero digital avc (their version of h.264), sony memory stick video, apple ipod, and 3GPP.

I of course will try different things and am open to trying new programs, but was hoping someone could point me in the right direction, to save hours of test converting to get it right.

I tried vdrop, and it just flashed a text window and did nothing else (not sure what I did wrong).

Most of the video I have to convert is either ripped dvd's or nero digital (some standard mp4 and some h.264 based) plus some random stuff (lots of different file formats). Based on past experience, some programs see nero digital files fine while others don't recognize it (its supposed to be normal mp4 though they don't follow all the rules). I'm open to another h264 converter for my htpc (nero digitals compatibility is getting on my nerves).

I am not concerned about file size on the player as much as I am on the computer (I don't want to double the size of my library on my htpc).

Any pointers would be appreciated. I should mention that I prefer something easy to use (maybe I'm stupid but I have had issues figuring out more complex conversion programs where all the settings are manual).


On a side note, does anyone know what this player is based on (what kind of rock chip it is or what its capable of)?

I almost forgot. The screen shot is the sample video file that was on the player. Perhaps this is what emerson considers an ideal format for this player (or its just what was easiest for them?).

can you throw us some images of the player interface - cant really see what this player is inside

try format factory and for a screen that size the dimensions of the vidseo seem very odd - its a shame as i am sure there are players (i know) there are players out there that will let you play most of your files unconverted

There is not much to the menus. They seem pretty basic.

One thing I should clarify. The odd resolutions like 352x192 are what nero are producing. The recommended size for the player is 320x240. the memory stick setting (for psp) gave 320x240 but sound was out of sink. I may try another mp4 converter since it seems to work well enough with some mp4.

One thing I should mention too. there is an information screen that lists the model as emp313, the firmware version as 2.9, total memory as 3838MB, free memory and card size. It does also have ms playfx in the equalizer options.
