Question cannot play avi files - get "format error"

Hi all
I recently acquired a 8gig (reality 4gig) unbranded player.I believe it is a nano 5th gen clone I cannot open it check the chips since it lacks any screws..
The problem I've been having is I cannot play avi files.

It has a built in camera that records video in .avi and it will play the videos it records but when I upload a avi to it i get a "format error".

I've tried 12 different converters (including the ones offered on here), made sure the avi file is the same frame size and everything.

Funny thing tho I have one video in wmv format that it will play but just that one.
So i'm at a loss to whats up with this. anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

thanks

here's a pic of the player

Can you provide us with more details of your player? Where did you buy it from? Is there a URL which shows more details of the player you can post?

Also, can you find out the firmware version of your player please? You can do this by going into your player's main menu, then choose "Setup" and in there should have a "Firmware Info" (or something similar). This will help us determine what type of chipset your player uses and so what video format it should (in theory) play.

One last thing, do you still have the sample video files that played on your player? If you do, can you upload it to this site or somewhere else so we can download it and check the specifications of the sample video?

I've had the same problem, cept its with flv's, my player has a test flv video and it plays but when i download from youtube it won't play, so goes for avi etc.

i used this to convert to avi thats Pazera_Free_FLV_to_AVI_Converter.zip

still funny though, i still need to convert avi files into avi files again with it so it will play

Hello
I wasted an awaful lot of time repeatedly converting video for my "32gb sucker" device.
The demo clip was impressive so I fed it to this video format querying utility AVIcodec, a free multimedia file analyzer
In my instance it showed that video was xvid and suggested that audio had to be mp2 rather than mp3 (but it will play plain audio mp3)
I then used the avs video converter to take some dv down to 320 x 240 , in initial tests it managed to cope with the original 25 fps and a 1000 bitrate setting (but perhaps yours might not).
My next problem was wondering why the 3rd 4th 5th etc clips that i transferred would not play, I assumed it was some change that I had made but when I realised that the files would not transfer back for testing I wound up at this site and realise that i have been defrauded, 3+gb of video in a 2gb device will never work...

Try dowloading this: Sample Rockchip videos with different screen sizes

Unzip them and copy them onto your player. Then from your player, see which of the videos will play on your player. That will give you a good idea what video resolution your videos need to be in for your player to be able to play them.

Let us know what you think.

Try downloading EasyChips from MyMPxPlayer.org, run it and see if it can tell you what chipset your player has.
